Tonight's a very big night at Casa del Ensalada. Lots of frivolity, merriment and silliness. Yes, The King will make another appearance: Creepy, funny, sugary sweet. That's The King, baby. Truth be told, we started celebrating last week at a neighbor's party. Salad Wife went as the World Wide Web. Salad Boy went as a hot dog. Our hostess Beth graciously accepted Salad Wife's Brie Spider. (Her son, standing next to her, was a Woopie Cushion.) Some people just have a genius for creating anthropomorphic food. Their dog, Henry, was decked out for the occasion. Henry's stamina is in limited supply. This was the moment right before Henry turned into a humpkin. There was bobbing for apples, onions and potatoes. I might be biased, but I think vampires have an unfair biting advantage. Excuse me for a second. I think that verse is appropriate here: I thought that I would never see An apple-bobbing Robert E. Lee... There. Better now. The glue races were a big hit. So was the egg-toss. And so was the chow. Especially the finger food. The most remarkable part of the evening? The Woopie Cushion never saw this coming....

Now that the Rays season is over, I’ve seen and read about all the great accomplishments that led to their magical season. What I haven’t seen or read is what Closer Troy Percival meant to this team.
Percival was a leader in the clubhouse. During the regular season he had 28 saves and two wins. Without Percival, the Rays likely would not have won the AL EAST. But somehow, he’s been buried in the euphoria that followed in the post-season. As he watched from his California home, the Rays busted into the national spotlight. Injuries got the best of this veteran. Nothing hurts more than to have to sit back and watch because your body won’t cooperate.
I, for one, would like to thank Troy Percival for his time with the Rays. If he is to leave this game for good, he went out with class, he went out as one of the all-time closer’s in major league history, and he went out as one of the team’s true MVP’s. I do hope, when the AL EAST banner is raised at Tropicana Field next season, Troy Percival is there in person to be a part of it. He deserves that moment. He earned that moment more than any of you will know.

BUCCANEERS HEAD COACH JON GRUDEN QUOTES FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2008
|
| HEAD COACH JON GRUDEN
(On if Warrick Dunn practiced) “No, he did not practice today. Arron Sears did not practice, and obviously Jermaine Phillips. We think those guys are feeling better but we held them today.”
(On if Dunn and Arron Sears could play on Sunday) “Warrick didn’t do much last week. We’ll make that decision when we get to Kansas City. But they didn’t practice today, and today is Friday, so we are concerned obviously.”
(On playing through injuries) “It’s like that with all the veteran players that you’ve covered. These guys have played seven, eight, nine, 10, 12 years. There’s a reason why they do that. The guys that have had the kind of careers that Warrick has had, they all play through so many different things. If he can go based on our eyes and our visual evaluation, we’ll certainly let him play. In the time being, we’ve got to do what’s right, too, and that’s wait until we see it happen.”
(On B.J. Askew) “He’s still sore. I don’t know what percent you would qualify him at, but it’s not 100% and it’s not 90%. It’s coming back to him. It was good to have him out there three consecutive games.”
(On Kansas City’s young defense) “If you look at the film, they’re a good defensive team. They’ve yielded some big plays, and a lot of the big plays they’ve given up have been at the end of games where they’re frantically trying to get the ball back. They played Denver extremely well. They had the Jets. They’re a hard team to throw the ball against. They’re a good defensive team. This [Derrick] Johnson out of Texas is a Pro Bowl linebacker. And I compared [Brandon] Flowers to a Ronde Barber early in his career, and I mean that. He is a hell of a player. [Glenn] Dorsey will be just fine and [Tamba] Hali is buzzing around like a number-one draft choice like everyone expected he would. They play hard. Gunther Cunningham is one of the premier defensive coaches in the league and everywhere he goes they have creative pressure and they play good hard-nosed energy football. It will be a real test for us. And I’ve been Arrowhead enough times – it never matters what their record is or what the stakes are. They play their butts off in that stadium and we’ve got to know that.”
(On if this is a game that can be overlooked) “Not in the National Football League. I’ve got a lot of healthy respect for this team. All you’ve got to do is look at the game film. The scores don’t indicate, the won-loss record does not indicate where this team is. As was said earlier, they’re a young team getting better and Thigpen is a big reason why they’re getting better. I’m impressed with them. They play hard.”
(On the offensive line) “With a young line, we don’t stop challenging those guys. And they’ve responded. They’ve played good football for us. They’re not going to catch it, they’re not going to call the plays, they’re not going to throw it. They’re going to play their butts off. They’re a good group. We feel like we’ve got, from left tackle to right tackle, a very good group of guys. And [Jeremy] Zuttah and Sean Mahan give us six and seven that we like a lot. And I think this [James] Lee kid in a little time is going to be a real good football player. They’ve got to pick it up because they know they’re the strength of our team. They all know that they’re going to play hard because they always do.”
(On recognition for Bucs players) “I’ve just been very impressed with our team. I don’t want to speak out on any individuals, although I think we’ve had some guys that have really exploded onto the scene as Pro Bowl-caliber players. I really think the center [Jeff Faine] is a great player and I think we’re getting better on the line. I think Earnest Graham, what he’s done, speaks volumes about the kind of man he is and football player he is. And defensively speaking, our secondary, those guys are for real. And our linebacking corps, those guys are outstanding players. I hope Tanard Jackson, I hope some of these guys get the recognition that they deserve. Barrett Ruud, I hope he gets the recognition. But we’ve got to win some big games. We’ve got to play better on the road. But I like this team a lot. They’re together, they play hard. We have some young players playing, too. We’re building our team just like everybody else is, and there have been some real positive signs. Obviously there are some areas that we’d like to clean up and get better at, and health has a lot to do with that, too. You’ve got to get your team healthy and your best players have to play for you to play at your best, in my opinion.”

I got an email from that cool artsy theater-type himself, Mr. David Jenkins. He was concerned that the two local daily newspapers may not be sending a reviewer to the latest Jobsite production, thereby depriving all of their readers the chance to read what’s going on (not to mention the publicity for Jobsite that comes with it). Update: The Tribune confirmed they will not review it.
Unfortunately, I’m going to be busy being a rock star and a dad to attend any of the performances this weekend, much less make my thoughts of it somewhat coherent. So, I figured I would ask you great readers to do the job of the local dailies, and go see a play, and write a review for it.
Here’s the advance from the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center:
The History of the Devil
Jobsite’s 10-year anniversary production, and by all accounts the show that put Jobsite on the lips of area theatergoers. Jobsite is excited to revisit this epic courtroom drama where the Devil is up for parole that sold out every performance in 1999. The trial of the new millennium is about to begin – and you’ve been called for jury duty! Old Nick believes he’s done his time and deserves to be readmitted to heaven. History is examined (Christ’s temptation, Nazi crimes), witnesses are called (including a belligerent Dante Alighieri), and the audience is left to consider whether the Prince of Darkness has spent his time as an outcast, as a mastermind or in the service of man in this black comedy.
Contains adult language, situations and subject matter.
RUNNING TIME: Approximate run time is two hours and 45 minutes including a 15-minute intermission.
You may also want to take a look at Jobsite’s longer description of the play. Also, CreLo’s Leilani Polk previews the production, and from a nearby cubicle, Anthony Salveggi recommended the show.
If it sounds intriguing enough for you to consider, then please just buy the tickets and enjoy History of the Devil.
However, if you feel like doing the job of our local daily newspapers and promise to write up a small review of the play for publication on Sticks of Fire, use the CONTACT FORM to send me your phone number, and I’ll make sure you get hooked up (aka FREE TIX) for the showing of your choice.
And yeah, both David and I want you to give your honest thoughts on the show.

At first Oldest wanted to be Rocky and Youngest wanted to be a lawyer. They changed their minds when they put on these masks in Target and got laughs from everyone in the store.

What those people were laughing at...I have no idea.

For most of you, you will have a little work to do Sunday morning, as we've reached the end of Daylight Saving Time. Time to fall backward one hour. Which means, if you're up at 2:05am EDT, an hour later it will be...2:05 again, this time in EST.
It's also the only time all year that neighboring time zones will be in the same hour. For instance, it will be 2:05am EST in New York, and 2:05am CDT in New Orleans.
OK...OK....I'll stop before I confuse you even more.

Somewhere in this crazy country of ours, another Scott Peterson is plotting to do away with his pregnant wife. A copycat Debra Lafave is romancing a middle school student. And a custody battle is brewing over a woman in a persistent vegetative state. (Remember the name, Heather Lavers. You may be hearing it a lot).
I can almost guarantee that these stories, or stories much like them will emerge like winter wheat as soon as the flow of electoral expectorate is cut off November 4th. As ready as I am for the commercials and the polling and the punditry to cease, it won’t be two weeks before I’ll be grumbling about the wall to wall coverage of tabloid stories that can only gain purchase in a vacuum.
The campaign of 2008 (which really started in 2004) has been an embarrassment of riches. Notwithstanding the recent focus on wardrobe shopping and washed up terrorist William Ayers, this contest has been uncommonly substantive. The time spent debating one candidate’s plan to spread the wealth verses another candidates determination to continue the trickle down tax cutting of the last 8 years is time well spent. Still, enough is enough.
The only thing that might spare us a return to the cable network’s obsessive coverage of crime and scandal is a worsening of the economic situation. Not a recession, but a full-on soup kitchen, Hooverville, banjo pickin’, boxcar riding depression. But by then, we will all have cancelled our cable subscription.

You know that scene at the end of "Bull Durham" when
Crash Davis returns to Durham after retiring. Crash is tired. He doesn't want to think about baseball. He doesn't want to think about
Quantum Physics. He didn't want to think about anything. He just wanted to be.
We feel a little like that right now only worse, because we are pretty sure we broke our liver during this postseason run. After being on edge for the last two months, the sudden disappearance of the baseball season has left us wondering around the house sober and actually getting work done. That's not good for us. That's not good for anybody.
So we are going to take a few days off. We have a pretty nice little weekend planned. We're going to go to Home Depot. Yeah, buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath, & Beyond, We don't know, we don't know if we'll have enough time. Oh yeah, and a little thing called The Second Best Holiday of the Year.
Next week we will be back on board. We have a few loose ends to tie up for the 2008 season and then we will start working on 2009. The first step will be to update our
Trade Value Index and both the
40-man and
25-man roster projections for 2009.
So have a good weekend, don't do anything we would do and when you drink, raise a glass to the 2008 Tampa Bay Rays, American League Champions.

There was only one early voting location in Manatee County, Florida, so lines were long. People accepted the waits with good grace, though. Video includes interviews with voters waiting in line and both Republican and Democratic party activists.
