Florida legislators want to pass a $1/pack fee for smokers, ostensibly to help fund cancer research.
For those of you who don't know, I used to smoke a pack a day. I quit last February after smoking for about 9 years. For the most part I try not to be one of those I-just-quit-so-can-you in-your-face anti-smoking assholes. I don't like being around smoke anymore, but I also don't feel it is my right to tell anyone else what to do.
But I still get pissed off every time the legislature says, "We need more money... let's tax a vice!" They get away with it time after time. Does anyone really think this tax money is going to be used solely to fund cancer research? Do you think this "pot of gold" won't be usurped next time some lawmaker has a pet project he wants funded?
I'm all for cancer research, but the answer to a problem doesn't always have to be more taxation and government-run programs. ...
