Musical Monday – Pretty Wings

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Love me a little Maxwell!!!

Time will bring the real end of our trial
One day they’ll be no remnants
No trace, no residual feelings within ya
One day you won’t remember me

Your face will be the reason I smile
But I will not see what I cannot have forever
I’ll always love ya, I hope you feel the same

Oh you played me dirty, your game was so bad
You toyed with my affliction
Had to fill out my prescription
Found the remedy, I had to set you free

Away from me
To see clearly the way that love can be
When you are not with me
I had to leave, I have to live
I had to lead, I had to live

If I can’t have you, let love set you free
To fly your pretty wings around
Pretty wings, your pretty wings
Your pretty wings around

Last Night’s Affair: Chateau Haut-Bailly

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

The Wine:
Chateau Haut-Bailly Pessac-Leognan 2003

The Affair:
Let me just tell you that I hate Sundays. I know I should be happy that I'm not at work, but there's still something about the end of the weekend and the impending doom of a new week that just makes me depressed. Luckily, I've found that a nice dinner accompanied by an even better bottle of wine really helps soften the blow.

Tonight, to celebrate my sense of smell returning as well as the coming week, I decided to open a bottle that I brought back from Bordeaux personally.

Not only was this the first Chateau that I visited while in Bordeaux, but it was also one of my favorites. Haut-Bailly's wine is just so full and elegant... like nothing else I've had from the U.S. Although I think Bordeaux wine is somewhat of an acquired taste, those who appreciate its beauty would be amazed by this particular festival for the palate. From the second the cork is removed, until the moment the last drop is poured, this wine evolves, blossoms, and is sure to make you fall in love.

I know I did!

I can't think of a better way to start the week and thank the universe for returning my sense of smell....

Thank you!

For this and other affairs, check out the summary of scores, map, or even choose my next bottle.

Sale of the Lightning from OK Hockey to Vinik ‘all but official’

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Hey Lightning fans, we may be going from this:

koules_barrie

To this:

vinik_jeff

Yeah the coolness  factor is getting a downgrade...ok in seriousness, the St. Petersburg Times reports that the deal for Jeffrey Vinik to buy the Tampa Bay Lightning is 'all but official'. Boston hedge fund manager who runs Vinik Asset Management LP in Boston is in negotiations to buy the Lightning, the lease to the St. Pete's Times Forum and 5 acres of land surrounding the arena for $170 million.

Since the Lightning are rumoured to be needing cash advances, the sale of the team before the next payroll date on February 15th is being pushed by the NHL.

Gross ass leg

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

This is a photograph of my shin on the night of our last Softball victory. Because we ended up winning, and because the slide that caused this, was an integral part of that victory, I am okay with it. Basically I realize I am an old man and I also realize that we are playing hack league Softball.
-
I will only slide when it is important. That night, because we were playing a team that had always beat us in all our previous matchups, and also because I believed my run to be important, I Slid. I promise you internet that the majority of the time I will just be out if there is a close play, because sliding fucking hurts.

-

On this night we were fighting Momentum. We had gotten up big, but those bastards made it close with their comeback. We were only winning by one run when we went into the seventh. We had the top half so we needed some insurance runs. I had hit a double with two outs to knock in one of them and then the guy behind me grounded out to third, except instead of doing the normal play in throwing it over to firstbase, he tried to get me out instead. He fielded it cleanly and his play was to go to firstbase except for whatever reason, he believed he could get me out. Probably should have as well, except he pre-maturely through it to the second basemen and I just kept running to third. The second baseman had to hurry it up to third, but I was able to slide under that bullshit and scraped the hell out of my lower leg as you can see from this photograph.

-

We did end up winning and I eventually scored another insurance run so it was all good.

Lightning 2, Capitals 3 – A Sunday Aftenoon Comeback Falls Short

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

There was another game on this afternoon? It wasn't just the Pens v. the Wings on NBC? Because that OT was a helluva 5 minutes of hockey. Why hello there you 3pm start time on a Sunday....

lightning_jan31_10capitals

The Lightning played a game where their worst enemy was not the Caps, but the magnetic ability for the puck to hit the goal posts. The first two periods for the Lightning was a little ho hum and far too much play in their own end. Smith was in net today after missing six games with a neck strain, but looked a little slow in net and perhaps should have waited to start until Tuesday's game against the Thrashers.

Going into the 3rd period, the Caps were already up by two goals. The Lightning scored a pair of goals in the third period, the 1st from St. Louis and the 2nd on the powerplay from Stamkos (his 29th of the season) but never was able to get another for the game winner. Ovechkin ended their rally with a goal wrister at 13:34. Lecavalier got testy in the dying minutes of the third period, which would have been useful if there was more than 12 seconds left in the game. But can you really get a game tying goal with 90 seconds left having your checking line out there? In Tocchet's mind you can, though it doesn't seem to work in reality. In the end Lecavalier got tossed for unsporstmanlike conduct after he had some choice words to the officials after being tossed out of the faceoff circle.

This was the Caps' 10th consecutive victory to tie their franchise record. The Caps played without Mike Green as he was serving the 1st of his 3 game suspension for the elbow on Frolik from Friday night.

In other news, the Lightning have sent down center Paul Szczechura to the Admirals for a conditioning stint today.

USTA Hall of Fame Inductee Jim Vuille of Bartlett Park fame

USTA Florida Volunteer Award Video Profiles
1/29/2010 12:00:00 AM
In December 2009 USTA Florida celebrated "60 Years of Love and 30 Years of Dedication" during the USTA Florida 60th Annual Meeting and Anniversary Celebration Weekend at the Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort, recognizing the 30 years of service by retiring junior tennis icon Bobby Curtis.

Approximately 400 USTA Florida volunteers and guests attended the weekend celebration.

Above is the video profile of the Hall of Fame Inductee Jim Vuille of Sun City Center.
How do you encapsulate over 80 years of tennis achievement in just a few short sentences? If the truth be told, it's an almost impossible task when you are talking about Jim Vuille, who is a true tennis icon. During an amateur playing career that began in 1919 and ended in 2003 at the age of 94 due to an arthritic knee, Vuille has won many titles and earned top rankings in age divisions stretching from his junior days to his last competitive event in a Florida 90s tournament in 2002 when he was ranked No. 2 in his age division.
A legend in the St. Petersburg area, Vuille, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday, helped establish Bartlett Park, now known as the St. Petersburg Tennis Center, and claimed the city championship numerous times. Over the years, his commitment to the St. Petersburg Tennis Center never wavered, which is evidenced by his support of the club that included stints serving as president, interim pro, maintenance helper, and manager from 1974 to 1984.

Trikes in Portland and Tampa

Sunday, January 31st, 2010
I thought a fun difference between Portland and Tampa in the big trike world were these two tricycles.

Here's one in Portland that distributes all types of bicycle literature, while the one in Tampa . . .

. . . distributes beer.

I saw this trike on Nebraska Avenue while finishing a roundtrip bike ride from Seminole Heights to downtown St. Petersburg and back today. It was brisk out there this afternoon -- temps in the low 50s with cool winds out of the northeast.

Maybe he wants to join SWFBUD?

Back on the Wagon

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Tonight I am going to crack into something nice to celebrate!

The common cold is one of the worst things that can happen to a wine lover. It destroys your appetite, sense of smell, and overall ability to enjoy wine. I am excited to say that after almost a week of being beaten down like a terrorist by Jack Bower, I have finally started to kick this cold. Today I am excited because I can finally smell again!

Being sick and sober wasn't the worst thing that could have happened to me. During my unintentional detox from the grape, I was able to regroup and formulate an empire that is going to take my "wine whoring" to the next level. I know this sounds crazy, but stay tuned for the details next week, I think you're really gonna like this one!

Also, if you pre-ordered a Wine Whore glass, I should have them all by Tuesday. As long as they came out okay, I'll be shipping them out by mid next week! Don't worry, it's not too late to order one (or more) of these for yourself. (Click here for details)

What are you celebrating?

OSHNA Special Board Meeting – CVS Pharmacy

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

The OSHNA Board has scheduled a Special Board Meeting on Monday, February 1, 2010, starting at 6:30pm, at the Seminole Heights Branch Library, 4711 Central Avenue.

The purpose of the meeting is for Board members, as well as residents of Old Seminole Heights, to have an opportunity to voice opinions regarding the proposed CVS Pharmacy at Nebraska & Sligh Avenues. Your participation is encouraged. CVS Pharmacy has requested OSHNA’s support on this project, and in order to determine what position OSHNA will take, we are asking for input from the residents of OSH.

CVS went before City Council late Thursday evening to request a zoning change from commercial intensive to planned development in preparation for locating their store at Sligh and Nebraska Avenues.  A number of residents were present for the meeting, as were the presidents of all three Seminole Heights Neighborhood Associations and the Business Guild.

City Staff recommended against approval.

Councilmember Linda Saul-Sena made a motion to deny the request on the basis that it did not meet the comprehensive plan and was not a sufficient use of the unusually large 2.7 acre parcel.  Voting to deny approval for the project was Charlie Miranda, Linda Saul-Sena and Thomas Scott.  OSH falls within Councilmember Scott’s district.  Voting against denial was John Dingfelder and Joseph Caetano.  Mary Mulhern and Gwen Miller were absent.  A vote to deny requires a minimum of four votes to pass. The motion was carried over to this coming Thursday, February 6th.  If four councilmembers vote in the negative this Thursday, CVS has stated it will seek another location for the proposed pharmacy.

Remember “Young Guns”? Lets see how they stacked up…

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

I made the movie last offseason, to take a look at the young guys who would be called on to contribute for Tampa Bay. Here is that movie....and we will discuss it after the break...

oh, and click the little 360 arrow if you go to the site, and watch it in 720P.

First, lets look at the flashing names that go by...I chose these because these guys were NOT expected to produce that much, they would be bit players at best. Were they?

Adam Heyward- Special Teams player saw field time as linebacker too, but mostly only when there was a problem. Grade: C

Dre Moore- Only Morris knows what he saw of Mr. Moore, which was not too much. Grade: incomplete

Roy Miller- The Rookie ended up getting significant playing time, and impressed coaches with his emotion, especially after the Panthers drove the ball right down the Bucs in the 4th Qtr of their game at Raymond James. Miller was visibly upset in the locker room, something you can definitely build on. Grade: C+

Josh Freeman- The Rookie signal caller got his first start just about midway through the season and impressed a lot of people. Does the kid still have a lot to learn? What rookie QB doesnt. But a lot of people have raved about the kid at times this year, and the 2010 Bucs will be his team from the get-go. Grade: B-

These next two guys, we had no idea they would produce the kind of years they did. especially..

Sammie Stroughter- 7th round picks in the NFL are NOT supposed to make the team, much less jump into the #3 WR spot. He was second on the team in receiving yardage for WRs, and the Bucs have a lot to look forward to the youngster who returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Grade: B+

Quincy Black solidified his position as the SAM linebacker on the team. Grade: C+

Now, getting to the featured video clip guys, the first, Elbert Mack, disapointed many early in the year. He clearly was confused at times, and perhaps the 'looking back at the QB' system is more his type of role. Later in the year, after Raheem Morris changed the defense back to the familiar Tampa 2, Mack appeared at least a little more comfortable in it. It would seem nickel is the ceiling for him. Grade: D

Sabby Piscitelli went into the year needing to have a breakaway year to prove he was the right guy for the safety position. His continuous bad angles and poor tackling have the Bucs looking to shore up that position via the draft or free agency. Grade: D+

Geno Hayes used the entire year, but once the transition to the Tampa Two went into effect, he came on at the Will linebacker position. With extremely large shoes to fill, Hayes never let them get the best of him. The Bucs have high hopes for their linebackers, all three of which are Young Guns! Grade: B+

Aqib Talib really dominated most of the year, but remarkably so, better while in the Jim Bates system. Leading the team in interceptions, Talib was the Bucs shut down corner, taking the best receivers for the other team out of the game. Grade: A-

And so this year, with the focus on the  Bucs 10 draft picks and the 5 very high ones the building of this franchise will once again be on the extreme focus of the newest batch of Tampa Bay Buccaneer 'Young Guns'!

Great Food and Convenience Come Together at Reservations

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Reservations Gourmet- to-Go is often overlooked at as a Seminole Heights eatery but shouldn’t be. Reservation offers up a convenient service for those without the time to cook. The kicker is, that if you have been to Reservations you’ll crave it even when you have time to cook.  Reservations serves quality home cooked meals to-go and their weekly specials are huge deal for those that are budget conscious.

100_2155Not only is Reservations good but they are also locally owned and operated. The owners Anthony and Elke live here in Seminole Heights and make everything from scratch.

One order will usually serve a two people.  We have ordered 2 meals which easily served four people and we still had leftovers.  The order pictured to left included:

Yankee Pot Roast, fork tender beef slowly cooked with carrots, onions, green beans and potatoes for $11.95

Chicken Rustica,  boneless breast sautéed with crushed red pepper, garlic, capers, olives, tomato and Romano for $11.95

Both meals came with a house salad including vinaigrette dressing.

Chicken Rustica

Chicken Rustica

The Yankee Pot Roast was good but the Chicken Rustica was fantastic (BTW I am a fan of olives) . The mashed potatoes are great and the salad’s are above average. Other hits include the Chicken Marsala and the Meatloaf. Reservations also carries vegetarian dishes such as the Polenta Lasagna; polenta layered with portobellos, parmesan, mozzarella and pomodoro sauce.

Reservation’s specials change weekly. Make sure you sign up for their e-mail list which is on a clipboard on the front counter.

There is seating at Reservations and its a popular lunch spot for those looking for a great sandwich.  The hot sandwiches are a must try. Topping the hot sandwich list are the Hot Meatloaf Hoagie and the Buffalo Chicken Finger Sub for $7.95 each.

Slippers agrees, the Carrot Cake Rocks

Slippers agrees, the Carrot Cake Rocks

If you want to splurge a little you should try a piece of cake which will cost you $4.50. The Cheese Cake is a hit among neighbors but I have to give my personal recommendation to the Carrot Cake. I am not a fan of carrot cake but the Reservations version kicks ass.

Okay so I have said my piece. I went around and asked some of our neighbors what they thought and here’s their reviews:

I like their meatloaf and veggies. The Au Poivre Filet Mignon was very good. Sandwiches I like are the Chicken Caesar, Meatball and Meatloaf sandwiches. The food is fresh and the bread is top quality.

-Jeff

Love, Love, Love the food…and I’ve had just about everything on the menu. Their sandwiches are fantastic. Their other menu items are wonderful too. I can’t recommend them highly enough. Plus, Elke and Anthony are great and they live in the neighborhood!

-Helen

I go every Monday. They send an email to me on Mondays that tells me this week’s specials. I pick one up on the way home. My partner and I can have a very nice meal without having to do the cooking. I’ve eaten many things on their menu, including the pepper-crusted filet mignon, the mini meatloaf, chicken marsala, and last night we had chicken parmesan.

The food comes with a salad and a side dish for a flat price. A single order is enough for two people. I often get a slice of carrot cake as well. My average bill is about $16.00, including the cake and taxes. Two Big Mac meals are darned close to that price and aren’t anywhere near the quality.

If you want to try something, I recommend the mini meatloaf with the green beans and potatoes. You could feed a family of 4 on that for under $25 (two orders).

Musical Monday … Everybody’s Talking

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

For this week’s Musical Monday, I’ve picked the Beautiful South’s cover of Everybody’s Talkin’ just because although it’s lyrically pretty deep, I think it’s a happy tune.  Plus it makes me think of my upcoming glorious summer!

Enjoy!

Everybody’s talking at me
I don’t hear a word they’re saying
Only the echoes of my mind

People stopping staring
I can’t see their faces
Only the shadows of their eyes

I’m going where the sun keeps shining
Thru’ the pouring rain
Going where the weather suits my clothes
Backing off of the North East wind
Sailing on summer breeze
And skipping over the ocean like a stone

Goodbye, Gasparilla Marathon

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

At last my OB appointment, I asked my doctor for her approval to run the very last ever Gasparilla marathon.  After all, I’ve already ran two marathons and four half marathons and felt my body could handle it.  If I took the full 7 hours to alternate between running and walking, I should be fine.  Right?

Wrong. As a runner herself, my OB did not approve.  She felt the strenuous activity would not only deplete my body of the necessary nutrients but deplete the baby’s nutrients as well.  She also told me that such a strenuous physical activity could impact my bladder which would lead to surgery in the near future.

She recommended I slow down and shorten my distances and I picked her brain to find out just how short.

“Could I do a half marathon or a 15 K?”

“You’ll want to really cut back on the miles.”

“Like no more than 3 and even that is pushing it given your history of vaginal births and prolapse surgery in your family history.”

Ironically, in the past few weeks, my body seemed to agree with my doctor.  These days, it’s becoming increasing difficult to run 3 miles.  And as much as I really wanted to run in the last Gasparilla marathon, it seems I will have to set my sights on another marathon goal after I deliver this baby.

But having a running goal keeps me focused and now I am trying to decide if I should run in the Gasparilla Distance Classic 5K.  I have several  friends registered in the 5K and races are so much more fun with friends, but I worry about the crowds and my adrenaline.  Will my adrenaline kick in and I’ll want to run faster than I should?

To avoid late fees, today is the last day to pre-register for Gasparilla Distance Classic 5K, but  I can’t decide if I want to run/walk the 5K with my friends or stay in bed with my bladder.

Seminole Heights CVS – UPDATED

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

For those of you interested in Seminole Heights news, My Seminole Heights reports on the recent city council meeting about a new CVS opening – CVS – Council Motions to Deny.

“The motion requires four votes to pass and will be taken up again next Thursday when the other two councilmembers will have a chance to vote.”

I’m not sure if MSH supports or opposes the denial.

Life in Seminole Heights is clearly not happy with the recent turn of events as can be read in his The horrible 7 CVS waivers, and Beware Our New Masters.

As far as I can tell CVS worked with community leaders to implement an architectural design that matched some big picture ideas about how to re-design the neighborhood. CVS then asked for some changes to the plan. Many neighborhood leaders were willing to accept those changes, but city staff argued that the changes were too much, and that the Council should nix the project.

The Official Unofficial Seminole Heights Blog opposes the denial and supports the CVS building. Commenters in this post present both the pro-CVS arguments and the arguments of those opposed to CVS.

UPDATE: Alexis at Tommy in Seminole Heights lets us know that there OSHNA has called a special meeting.

“The OSHNA Board has scheduled a Special Board Meeting on Monday, February 1, 2010, starting at 6:30pm, at the Seminole Heights Branch Library, 4711 Central Avenue.”

The iPad and Information’s Third Age

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

If you’re into information and media history let me recommend the essay The iPad and Information’s Third Age by William Rankin, director of educational innovation, associate professor of medieval literature, and Apple Distinguished Educator, Abilene Christian University.

He provides a brief historical sketch of media and information to explain his take on the iPad.

“Yes, we have eBooks on a variety of digital devices, but they haven’t yet taken real advantage of their electronic status. Books that are static, don’t allow customization, don’t connect with other information on the device, and don’t leverage social connectivity aren’t the future, no matter how sophisticated the device that serves them. They’re simply the past repackaged.”

I’m a fan of neither Apple, nor the iPad, and don’t particularly agree with Rankin’s conclusion. That doesn’t mean I don’t see the importance of Apple and the iPad (and e-books in general). Rankin does a good job of explaining why this new development in our electronic information ecology is important.

This Week In Minor League Mancrushes: Desmond Jennings

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

If the most popular player on a football team is the backup quarterback, then the baseball equivalent is the big-time minor league prospect. For the Rays, that is Desmond Jennings. Below is one of Jennings’ 8 home runs he hit for Montgomery last year.

Feel free to lock the doors, dim the lights and play some mood music.
