The Todd Kalas Fan Club Lives

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Todd Kalas has a funny way of always finding the young ladies. And this particular lady is awfully wide-eyed in the presence of our always captivating Mr. Kalas.

How cute. How “Fatal Attraction.”

It’s Baby Bird Season In Florida

Friday, April 30th, 2010
Baby Brown Thrashers

Here are two of the juvenile Brown Thrashers in our front yard that at the time were on a couple of days old.

The other day while we were doing some landscaping we came across a nest in one of the bushes in our front yard. When we took a closer look it is a nest of a Brown Thrasher. Inside the nest that the female was sitting on was three babies that are only about two days old. They are completely blind, have no feathers and react only to sound.

Breeding season for Brown Thrashers is March through July. Both birds build a large, coarse, cup shaped nest of twigs, dead leaves, and other vegetation. Fine grass lines the inside of the nest, which will be located in shrubs or bushes on near the ground. Both birds will incubate 2 to 6 smooth, glossy eggs for 11-14 days. Egg color is white to pale blue or greenish-blue with reddish-brown speckles. The Young will fledge in just less than 2 weeks and the adults will care for them until they fledge and for a short period after that.

We are going to keep a close eye on this little nest and we hope to get more photos and videos of their development over the next month or so. What an exciting find!

On The Cuff Review Mother’s Day Gift Guide Event

Friday, April 30th, 2010

On The Cuff prevents water from running down your arms when you’re washing your face, washing dishes, bathing baby, etc. An unusual idea, but once you use it, you won’t want to live without it. Make your Mom smile this Mother’s Day with On The Cuff!

She’ll wonder what it is, but when she tries it, she’ll probably say, “Why didn’t I think of that?” As Moms we have our hands in water a lot and who wants wet sleeves or wet arms? On The Cuff solves that problem easily.

ON THE CUFF™ – the “one size fits all” design is easy to use and comfortable to wear.

  • The unique stretch material of the cuffs allows you to slip onto your wrists without tearing.
  • Requires snug fit, push cuffs up your arm to tighten if needed.
  • If cuffs get heavily soiled rinse with warm soapy water, squeeze out excess water and allow to dry.

My Review: I have to admit, I thought this was an odd item at first. After using it a few times, I realized the time it saved though. I was a lot less frustrated when doing my every day tasks. I used it when washing those dishes and things I don’t put in the dishwasher, when I cleaned off the counters and when I helped wash my daughter’s long hair. And no wet arms or sleeves. They were easy to pull over my hands and then fit on my arms. I like the mesh bag so to keep them in and dry.

Purchase: Buy a mesh bag with 2 cuffs costs $7.99 online.

This Mother’s Day Gift Guide event has been ongoing throughout April. Please visit to see other reviews and giveaways.

Heh-heh: Pee-wee Herman set to star as ‘Jokey Smurf’

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Smurfs If you weren't planning on catching the new live-action Smurfs film, time to change your mind and sing a happy song: Paul Reubens -- oh hell, just call him Pee-wee Herman -- is on board to play "Jokey Smurf."

"For the uninitiated -- or the memory-challenged -- Jokey Smurf was the one who would play pranks on his fellow little, blue creatures," Yahoo Movies explains.

Set for a summer 2011 release, The Smurfs will be a hybrid live-action/CGI movie. Others on board to act or voice roles:Neil Patrick Harris, Katy Perry, Michael Cera, and Jonathan Winters.

TOP 5 FORGOTTEN PAUL REUBENS MOVIES:

5. BLOW (2001): This movie is on cable nonstop these days. Reubens is the hairdresser/drug-dealer who teams up with Johnny Depp. [Trailer]

4. BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (1992): Reuben's role as the vampire Amilyn is the only reason to watch this dreadful flick. [Epic death scene]

3. BACK TO THE BEACH (1987): He appears as Pee-wee doing The Bird. Sadly not the Morris Day and the Time version. [Watch it]

2. THE BLUES BROTHERS (1980): Credited simply as "Waiter."

1. MEATBALLS PART II (1984): I don't want to actually watch this again to confirm his appearance. Just call him "Albert."

And, of course, obscure but not forgotten. Paul Reubens' famous scene as "Howie Hamburger Dude" in Nice Dreams:

"I'm not sorry I took the money!"

A Peruse around Buccaneers.Com

Friday, April 30th, 2010

20100421-season-tickets-side-ad_medium

The Buccaneers.Com website is in full-fledged promotion mode. A quick look around will reveal some of their newest marketing strategies. Now I'm not a Marketing guy, but it only takes a little bit of common sense to look deeper into things.

First, they have a great website. Excellent looking graphics, easy to use and some good information.

Next, they clearly have moved on with 'new' faces of the franchise. Ronde Barber is there, but you will have to click on some of their tabs to find him. Along with Ronder in the second teir of faces on the Bucs website you will find Tanard Jackson, Davin Joesph, Carnell Williams, Jeff Faine and Aqib Talib. I find it interesting that they promoted two offensive lineman and two guys who have brought the most negative PR to the team.

Kellen Winslow, Josh Freeman and Barrett Ruud don the home-page. For a team that isn't willing to give Ruud a new contract, they seem convinced that they can milk a positive PR with him on the fore-front of their internet campaign.

Unite and Conquer - This is the slogan for the 2010 season. I can't figure it out. What are we uniting? As a team? I Guess, but was it a team that was in danger of dividing? Not really. Uniting rookies with the veterans? Happens to every team. As fans? As a city? I just don't get it. Plus, what are we conquering? Nobody expects the team to win the Super Bowl. Conquer the NFC South? Ambitious, but slightly out of reach. I say all of this slightly in jest, but it doesn't really say anything about the character of the team or what we are hoping to achieve. On top of that, it's not thematic to the Buccaneers. Pirates certainly didn't unite together. They stole by every means necessary. To me it's nothing other than something that sounds slightly motivational or something you would hear out of On Any Given Sunday.

Sing the National Anthem - The organization is holding a open-audition of sorts for anyone who wants to sing the National Anthem at a game this season. It's a cheap way to get somebody to sing the National Anthem, but it's also fun for the fans and is a marketing strategy to get people involved with the Bucs. America loves to vote on things (which I wouldn't be surprised if that's what it came down to, an American Idol type vote on Buccaneers.Com) and people love the opportunity to have their 15 minutes of fame. I like the idea and I think it is original and fun.

Cheap Tickets? - When you open the website you will see promotions for $25 Youth and $35 Adult tickets. They bring you into the link with an EXCELLENT video that runs on the theme of Own _____. Own Success. Own Physical. Own Emotions. Own The Moment, etc. The prices aren't bad, but the range of tickets quickly jump from the 35 a game to about $70 for upper-west corner seats.

Nelson Wants Investigation of Oil Spill

Friday, April 30th, 2010
Sen. Bill Nelson has indicated he will not vote for the climate change bill, if Lindsay Graham's proposal for an expansion of offshore drilling is in the final bill.

"The president needed Lindsey Graham to take the point on this," a Nelson aide told the Huffington Post. "Lindsey wanted the drilling in the gulf. I think the president's plan was viewed as the concession to Republicans in exchange for their support. This incident has killed [that]."

Nelson later came out with a press release urging the White House to ban further offshore drilling.

Nelson is urging an investigation of the spill. He is pressing to have the federal regulatory system included in the investigation.

NELSON: Just how lax did the regulations and the regulators become? You remember several years ago the very heart of the federal government that does the regulation, called the MMS, the Minerals Management Service, you can remember the stories that they had had all kinds of booze parties, all kinds of marijuana parties, and all kinds of sex parties. And this came out in a number of congressional investigations. Well, is this another regulatory system that’s gone on the blink? Compared to the Securities and Exchange Commission that went on the blink and wasn’t watching the home front on Wall Street that we’re now reaping the results from. So, this is what an investigation is going to be about.

Nelson is showing a surprising amount of spine. The White House needs Nelson's vote on a climate change bill. Graham will add energy industry-friendly amendments to the bill and then not vote for the final product. The White House can not afford to have Democratic defectors.

Major League Baseball Players Association v. Arizona

Friday, April 30th, 2010
The Major League Baseball Players Association has come out against the Arizona ID bill. This is why I love unions.

“The recent passage by Arizona of a new immigration law could have a negative impact on hundreds of Major League players who are citizens of countries other than the United States. These international players are very much a part of our national pastime and are important members of our Association. Their contributions to our sport have been invaluable, and their exploits have been witnessed, enjoyed and applauded by millions of Americans. All of them, as well as the Clubs for whom they play, have gone to great lengths to ensure full compliance with federal immigration law.

“The impact of the bill signed into law in Arizona last Friday is not limited to the players on one team. The international players on the Diamondbacks work and, with their families, reside in Arizona from April through September or October. In addition, during the season, hundreds of international players on opposing Major League teams travel to Arizona to play the Diamondbacks. And, the spring training homes of half of the 30 Major League teams are now in Arizona. All of these players, as well as their families, could be adversely affected, even though their presence in the United States is legal. Each of them must be ready to prove, at any time, his identity and the legality of his being in Arizona to any state or local official with suspicion of his immigration status. This law also may affect players who are U.S. citizens but are suspected by law enforcement of being of foreign descent.

The Major League Baseball Players Association opposes this law as written. We hope that the law is repealed or modified promptly. If the current law goes into effect, the MLBPA will consider additional steps necessary to protect the rights and interests of our members.
