BUCSHOTS: Pool of Safeties gone, The UGGHHH Video of Punt Blocking, Sams Club and More…
Friday, March 12th, 2010Stephen Holder uses a nice play of words regarding Safety Brodney Pool and the NY Jets.
Not really sure if we were interested in a FA Safety or not. Tends to tell me that the Bucs have one in mind for the future in the draft. But which one?
What does a blocked punt sound like? Watch this video in HD and hear it for yourself!
Love this, you hear it over and over and over..., and I thought THUD was funny.
"It's Not Sam's Club" says Raheem Morris. True! Check out the Joe Henderson article...
Its not Costco Either. Most free agents these teams got were very pricy due to the simple but reliable laws of Supply and Demand.
Bucpower.com has their version of ESPN's hit show, and you can read the panel's opinions which are pretty interesting...
This site is like the Buccaneer's Bible for information; and there is good reading of opinions too. Nice take on the ESPN show around the horn, kinda. I like when they mute the guys towards the end!!

Friday, March 12th, 2010Linebacker depth and special teams always is a big need for the Bucs.
That's why Raiders free agent linebacker Jon Alston is visiting with the Bucs today.
Buc Wild: With McCoy gone and no other depth to speak of, this would be one of those signings we might would make, but probably never talk about. Thanks to Vin for the heads up.
Nineteen? Tampa Bay Lightning at Washington Capitals preview
Friday, March 12th, 2010WHERE:Verizon Center, Washington, District of Columbia
WHEN: 7 PM EST
MEDIA:Sun Sports (cable), 620 WDAE (radio)
OPPONENT COVERAGE: Japers Rink
It's all 19.
It's easy to get lost in the fading playoff chances for the Bolts, it's easy to get disappointed at the conclusion of the season. Lets forget about that for a second and rally around the high of the moment.
It's all what-could-be 19.
When compared to the records in NHL history, it's only nineteen, but it's still the grandest point streak in Lightning team history. Steven Stamkos has been a machine in notching points for eighteen consecutive games. He goes for nineteen tonight in Washington DC as the Bolts take on the Caps in the finale of a disappointing road swing through the great white north.
The Bolts have likely played themselves out of the playoffs during the last 8 games (which started before the Olympic break), going 3-6-1 during that span with key losses to the Rangers, Bruins and Canadiens - other teams that sat on the bubble for a playoff berth.
And as we noted yesterday, the destructive grudge in management (Tocchet versus Johnson ) may have been the proverbial final nail in teh coffin of the Lightning season. The lack-of-acquisitions at the deadline may have also played a part, but a puck moving defenseman would not have cured the ills of the Lightning blue line.
Regardless, the stretch-run has been nothing short of spectacularly upsetting.
The Washington Capitals have clinched their third consecutive Southeast Division crown, congratulations to them. With the Verizon Center crowd playing as a fantastic sixth-man Lord Stanley's Cup making another trip to a Southeast Division citizen is a distinct possibility. We will a'll have to wait for the playoffs, of course, to find out if that happens.
With Smith in goal last night, look for Antero Niittymaki between the pipes for the Lightning this evening. It may not make a difference in how the defense has been performing in front of their netminder as of late.

Rays To Go Green For First Time Since 2007
Friday, March 12th, 2010As we discussed last week on Twitter, the Rays will be wearing green caps on St. Patrick’s Day. Marc Topkin has the first picture (hat tip to Rays Renegade who first broke the news last week).

This is significant on a couple of levels…
First, it is a tradition for teams to wear green caps (some teams add green jerseys) on St. Patrick’s Day. And this year marks the first spring training the Rays are scheduled to play on St. Patty’s Day since the team traded in their green uniforms for blue. Was it a coincidence that the Rays just happened to be idle on St. Patrick’s Day two years in a row? We think not.
Second, the last time the Rays player on St. Patrick’s Day (2007), the Rays became the first big league team to actually wear less green on St. Patrick’s Day as they swapped out their green caps for white as seen below.

Friday, March 12th, 2010[THE HANGOVER] The One Where We Discuss The Duke’s Strong Start, Big Dub’s Rough Start And A Realignment Pipedream
Friday, March 12th, 2010
The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.
THE GOOD: The Duke. After a first start the was too reminiscent of 2009, Andy Sonnanstine was impressive yesterday with 4 shutout innings allowing just 1 hit and 1 walk, striking out 3…Reid Brignac. Brignac had 2 more hits and 3 more RBI and now leads the majors with 13 RBI and is 10-20 to start the spring…Pat Burrell. Must have been a nice day in Bradenton. Bikinis in the crowd is the only explanation for his sudden power surge (he hit a home run).
THE BAD: Wade Davis. Big Dub settled down in the second, but not after allowing 5 straight baserunners with 2 outs in the first inning. All 5 would score…Minor Bullpen. Against the Pirates, 4 relievers that won’t be on the opening day roster combined to allow 8 runs in 7 innings on 12 hits and 5 walks…Carlos Pena. Another 0-fer. This one was 0-3 and he is now 0-12 this spring.
THE TELLING: Sean Rodriguez started at SS against the Pirates, with Reid Brignac at 2B…The Rays improved to 9-1 with their split-squad wins yesterday. Only the Indians (5-0) have fewer losses.
DEVIL DOGS WEBTOPIA…
- Marc Topkin has a report that says Leslie Anderson’s contract is a major league deal, placing him on the 40-man roster. [The Heater]
- The Rays made their first roster moves of the spring sending Tim Beckham, Jake McGee and Nevin Ashley back to minor league camp.
- Matt Joyce was scratched from yesterday’s start because of an elbow strain. He is only expected to be out a couple of days. Same for Dioner Navarro who came out of yesterday’s game after being struck by a pickoff throw. [The Heater]
- Rafael Soriano threw batting practice for the first time. [Tampa Tribune]
- There has been a lot discussion recently about “Floating Realignment” which is surprising because: A) There is zero indication that MLB is seriously considering this plan and B) There are a dozen major problems that have already been brought up in a thousand different stories. In short, there is zero chance this will ever even see the light of day. But if you are interested in reading one take, here is Rob Neyer’s. [ESPN]
- Roger Mooney has 5 questions for JP Howell. [Tampa Tribune]
- Joe Maddon does not consider it hypocritical to call for a ban on maple bats while his own players are using them…To clarify, we just think JoeMa’s words would carry more weight if he publicly called on his own players to set an example. But Maddon has always been a player’s manager, so he won’t do that. [St. Pete Times]
- A math professor at NJIT predicts the Rays will win 93 games and finish second in the AL East and first in the Wild Card. [Fox Sports]
- Steve Slowinski presents a simple way to evaluate defensive value. If you are not interested in the details, just take a look at where both Dioner Navarro and Kelly Shoppach fall on the list. If you are short on time, you might want to start at the bottom of the list. [Drays Bay]
- Dennis Maffezzoli spoke with BJ Upton and Joe Maddon about Upton’s disappointing 2009 season (“last season humbled me”) and his ability moving forward. [Lakeland Ledger]
- Big League Stew discusses something we have been harping for a while. Is Evan Longoria the most valuable asset in baseball? [Big League Stew]

Tampa Bay Lightning Game 66: at the Toronto Maple Leafs
Friday, March 12th, 2010The Tampa Bay Lightning lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 in overtime.
With the overtime loss, the Lightning gain a point in the standings, but they are still six points out of eighth in the Eastern Conference. Standing between them and playoffs are #8 Boston Bruins (72 points), #9 New York Rangers (67 points), and #10 Atlanta Thrashers (66 points). The Lightning currently have 66 points as well, but Atlanta has one more win. Tampa Bay has 16 games left in the regular season.
Vincent Lecavalier is one of the guys who is playing his heart out right now. Some might say that it’s too little too late, but he’s giving it his best when it counts – for the playoff run. He’s trying to carry the team on his back, like a captain should, but he’s not getting a lot of help. He had a team-high six shots on goal last night with four hits. You’ve got to love the way he’s playing right now, even if you’ve got to hate the fact that he’s a -10 right now.
Martin St. Louis is also giving it his all. He’s focusing more on setting up Steven Stamkos than scoring himself, though. He only had two shots on goal. But what makes me curious is why he’s taking faceoffs. He’s not a bad faceoff guy, but he’s playing with Stamkos and occasionally Lecavalier – both centers. I haven’t quite figured out the purpose of that. Incidentally, St. Louis is third in the NHL in assists.
Stamkos is still on his scoring tear. He now has points in 18 games straight, and he’s scored a goal in all of his last seven. He’s currently third in the league in the goal scoring race behind a tied Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby.
There’s no doubt that the team can score – finally! – but now the problem seems to be the defense. Mattias Ohlund is banged up, Victor Hedman is lacking confidence, and the rest of the defensemen are sort of hit and miss on any given night. There’s no consistency with them. Whether that’s a lack of chemistry or a coaching issue, that’s hard to tell. But it’s been the case for much of the season.
Goaltending has become an issue as well. Mike Smith just isn’t consistent at this point – even through the course of a single game. He looked great on some saves, but let in a couple of ugly goals. Antero Niittymaki’s hasn’t been playing with the same focus he had had earlier in the season, either.
Again, there are 16 games left in the season, but they don’t have all 16 games to make it into playoffs. But this team isn’t together enough on a consistent enough basis to do what they need to win. It’s not good enough to play hard, as St. Louis has said, but they’ve got to pull together on the ice as a team. Right now, they’re playing as separate entities – the defense is doing that over there, the forwards are over here doing something else, and the goalies are off in their own little world.
The only way they can win is as a team – even as inconsistent as their play has been. They can still pull it out, but they’ve got to do it together on the ice as one cohesive unit of 20 men pulling in the same direction for every single minute of all 16 games that are left. Vinny can’t do it alone, and he can’t do it with just Marty and Stamkos helping him out, either. If you don’t have everyone on the same page doing their jobs, then you might as well throw in the towel and start making your golfing plans now.
The next game is today against the Washington Capitals. Game time is 7 pm Eastern. Wouldn’t it be sweet if Stamkos could tie or pass Ovechkin in the goal scoring race in DC?

Must be time for my quarterly update
Friday, March 12th, 2010Bugs Bunny’s hardcore title match
Friday, March 12th, 2010I recently bought my second Looney Tunes box set packed to the brim with 60 more cartoon classics.
I busted it open last weekend and have been watching a cartoon a day, usually in the morning when I eat my Cap’n Crunch. It’s my way of making every morning an old-fashioned Saturday morning. Back when it was cool to wake up early, sit in front of the TV, munch on Crunch Berries, and watch cartoons.
Those were the days.
Before responsibilities. Before bills. Before work. Before The Man.
Anyway, today’s cartoon was appropriately fitting after my last post.

Mutt Tunes – Bugler
Friday, March 12th, 2010This song is performed by The Byrds and appears on the album Farther Along (1971) and on the box set The Byrds (1990).
The video features a cover of the song by John Howie Jr. & The Rosewood Bluff
Lyrics
Back when cattle creek used to sing
It’s waters were sweet and it’s banks were green
And sunny days, went on forever
Me and old bugler, we’d run wild
Bluetick hound and the redneck child
We thought we were, birds of a feather
Ah the fish would bite, my how they’d bite
We’d catch them possoms in the pail moonlight
For ma, just to please her
Bugler’s voice like gabriel’s horn
Up in the cypress, all down through the corn
Golden sounds, yes to treasure
Chorus
Bugler, bugler, bless your hide
Jesus gonna take you for a chariot ride
Say goodbye, say goodbye
One day ma she brought the news
She said, honey young bugler’s done paid his dues
He’s been hit down, yes on that highway
Dry your eyes and stand up straight
Bugler’s got a place at the pearly gates
Say goodbye sugar, oh say goodbye
Repeat chorus
Every Friday, Mutt Tunes showcases songs with or about dogs. Email your suggestions
Tampa’s Ben Chmura kicked off Project Runway
Thursday, March 11th, 2010 When they showed him calling his husband, I knew it was over.
In the world of reality TV, when someone who hasn't been at the forefront of a show suddenly gets a bit of personal attention -- as when Project Runway producers showed tearful Tampa fashion designer Ben Chmura calling his husband Bobby Thursday -- it's mostly a set up, sparking an audience connection so viewers feel a bit more loss when that person is ejected from the show.
And that's exactly what happened to Chmura Thursday, as he was shown exiting the competition after trying to assemble the first suit he ever designed during a challenge requiring contestants to find inspiration from the elements.
"If you don't know how to make a suit, don't make a suit," chided host/judge Heidi Klum. "It look like the first suit you ever made."
Chmura took criticism for his concept -- which involved taking the element of water and extending it to building a shark-like suit. Judge Michael Kors said his ribbed pants looked like "a jock strap," and fellow judge Nina Garcia simply pronounced it "a real mess."
"I think I bit off more than I can chew," Chmura told the judges.
For much of the competition, the Tampa resident had competed in the background -- his low key personality keeping down his screen time, while his designs never won a competition but were never bad enough to put him in danger of ejection.
Until this week.
"This isn't the last you'll hear from me," he promised during the show's last minutes Thursday. "It's one of those passions you just can't get rid of."
Stamkos: Can He Break 50?
Thursday, March 11th, 2010
So with the Lightning losing tonight to the Leafs (the LEAFS!), our playoff hopes are slowly slipping away one point at a time, I thought to myself, "What are the positives?
Well the positive with the Lightning this season has got to be Stamkos' stellar season. Even in the loss tonight, Stamkos continued his point streak with a goal and an assist extending the league's longest active point streak to 18 games. He also notched his 42 goal of the season in the losing effort to bring him within two goals of the league leaders Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby.
So with 16 games left in the season, how many goals do you think Stamkos will end the season with?
If he can score 50 goals in the next 16 games, he will become the third youngest player to score 50 goals in an NHL season. Can he do it? Clearly he can, and I don't think he'll stop at 50 goals either. Of course I'd rather the Lightning getting points in their fight for the playoffs instead of Stamkos getting goals to break the 50 goal mark, but since the Lightning's playoff hopes don't look great, might as well celebrate Stamkos' success. I say 51 goals.
A picture is worth something or other
Thursday, March 11th, 2010
My dear friend K found some of my old photos the other day. She enjoyed them so much that she thought they should be shared with the world. She said they offered a unique glimpse into my past and would afford my readers a better understanding of me. Sounds like a fine idea to me so I said sure. And here they are...
Look at the baby! So cute! Hard to believe that the innocent little cherub in this photo would go on to become a mild-mannered boy from the Midwest that moved to Tampa and fell in with a crowd of sexy, fast talkin' city ladies who got his poor head all a-jumbled.
Awww! Baby bath in the sink! Classic! Doesn't that make you want to just pinch my buttcheeks? Well, good news; you still can! Just send me a self addressed stamped postcard explaining why I should let you pinch my buttcheeks and if you're a lucky winner, I'll let you do it! Or just come up to me and do it whenever you want. Either way is good.
Halloween was always a special time to show off just how gosh-darned cute I was.
Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me!
I had challenges to deal with...
...unique obstacles to overcome. But who doesn't, right? I can't complain. Overall, it was a pretty great childhood. We had family pets...
This is Whiskers McPounce-A-Lot, my pet kitty cat. One day, men from the government showed up in a special van and asked my dad if he knew anything about a bunch of goats that had been slaughtered in the neighborhood. My dad talked to the men out in the garage where I couldn't hear them and right after that, Whiskers ran away from home. What a strange coincidence. We were sad, but dad cheered us up when he told us the government men had come to give us some money because they wanted us to go to Deer Forest on vacation that year!
This is Mr. Scribbles, our pet chimpanzee. Mr. Scribbles taught me the secret of how to throw really hard and really fast. But all the other kids in the neighborhood had a real problem with getting feces on their hands so nobody wanted me on their baseball teams.
By the time I was becoming a teenager, I had a reputation for being something of a fancy lad...
Something I carried with me into high school...
...and eventually, like many troubled teenagers, I got into some dark and disturbing occult stuff.I grew out of it (thank goodness) but I was still subject to going along with the fads of the day...
...when "Urban Cowboy" was all the rage.
For a while, in the late '80s, I was the lead singer for a Tom Petty tribute band called "Petty Theft". We were sued out of existence on the grounds that we were (in the eyes of the law and a jury of our so-called peers, I guess) "godawful".
Then, of course you remember the year I spent defending the planet from aliens as Dynaman, right? Right? Oh, come on! Earth on the brink of being destroyed? All humans taken captive to serve as slave labor in the riboflavin mines on planet Hamnick-Yelkl? Nobody remembers any of that. Everybody remembers Mookie Wilson hitting a grounder that went between Bill Buckner's legs in game 6 of the '86 World Series but nobody ever seems to remember the whole year I spent defending the earth from aliens as Dynaman?!? Such bullshit from you people.
Anyway, here I am today, happy and relaxed in Florida with Rhonda, my personal assistant. Literally: this picture was taken today, right outside my corporate suite at Clark Brooks, LLC. Hmm, looks like Rhonda has been skipping too many meals. I think I'll tell her to whip up some pot roast and mashed potatoes for dinner tonight. And what does the future hold?
Well, it all depends on the continuing development of my new exo-skeleton...
With Top 12 contestants chosen, St. Pete’s Michael Lynche emerges as the man to beat on American Idol
Thursday, March 11th, 2010 With just 12 contestants left in the competition, could St. Petersburg-raised Michael Lynche be the man to beat on American Idol?
The question arises after Lynche's powerhouse performance Wednesday -- an emotional take on R&B crooner Maxwell's version of Kate Bush's This Woman's Work which left judge Kara DioGuardi in tears and the Internet exploding with high praise.
A survey of nearly 3,000 Idol viewers by HCD Research found the highest number -- 24 percent -- believed Lynche should advance to the Top 12 on Thursday, which he did. And while other contestants still seem to be finding their artistic identities or learning how to work the stage, Lynche -- a graduate of the stage performance magnet program at Gibbs High School -- has basked in the spotlight with a deceptive ease since Day One.
"When somebody sings about what they've gone though," said DioGuardi, explaining her tears Wednesday while hearing new dad Lynche sing about parenthood, "as a listener, it really touched me."
Lynche joined male contestants Lee Dewyze, Casey Jones, Aaron Kelly, Andrew Garcia and Tim Urban in the Top 12, leaving long-struggling dancer-turned singer Todrick Hall and stiff-but-tuneful Alex Lambert to take the long walk home.
Among the ladies, Crystal Bowersox, Paige Miles, Lacey Brown, Siobhan Magnus, Didi Benami and Katie Stevens made the cut, with charming bohemian Lily Scott and smoky voiced Katelyn Epperly left out.
The results were a surprise to those of us who have been paying attention, because viewers didn't reject the worst singers this week -- or the week before. This time around, shaky singers Kelly and Brown deserved the big hook most, but Idol viewers this year have been rewarding weak vocalists with appealing images to an extent I've haven't seen in a while.
By the time this competition gets going, we may have a couple of Sanjaya-style hangers on, surviving by their bubbly personalities and ability to galvanize Idol's vast viewership.
As the show's Top 12 prepare to tackle a Rolling Stones theme next week, the competition already seems to be shaping up as a face off between Lynche's smooth soul and Bowersox's eccentric Tracy Chapman-meets-Melissa Etheridge folkisms.
Of course, you can ask Danny Gokey about the dangers of peaking too soon on Idol -- where the biggest danger to survival this season seems to be in courting the audience's boredom.

Thursday, March 11th, 2010Wave of Car Breakins Hit the Islans
Thursday, March 11th, 2010The car breakins continue on the island. Harold Moore with the Neighborhood Watch just shared this email about a string of cars hit overnight.
People….People…PEOPLE!!!!! Davis Islands is becoming known as a Bandit Buffet. Last night alone there were 8 (eight) auto burglaries on Davis Islands. I use the term “burglaries” loosely, as police report the vehicles were all left unlocked. One victim says his car was locked, but there was no sign of forced entry. We really MUST help our police stop crime in our neighborhoods by not being such willing victims!
Many of these happened along Martinique Avenue.
TPD will be phoning with a reverse 911 informing residents of the problem. Evidently, as Neighborhood Watch, we have not done enough to inform ALL our residents that criminals are among us, so please, if you have signed up to help, spend some time informing your neighbors.
Get their information, ie. emails, phone numbers, etc. so that they can be plugged in to whatever is happening on the Islands, crime-wise.
Thank You,
Harold Moore
Lightning 3, Leafs 4 – Losing to the Leafs Sucks
Thursday, March 11th, 2010
Losing to the Leafs sucks, especially when it's because of mistakes your own team makes. The Lightning yet again aren't able to get two crucial points in last push for the playoffs. The dream of the playoffs haven't ended, no, but when you watch a game like tonight where mistakes some of the Lightning players make become the reason why they lose the game, it's frustrating.
It is frustrating to have a goalie like Mike Smith who lets in ugly goals, and what's worse, in the last 10 games Niitymaki hasn't been much better. Steven Stamkos get's his 42nd goal of the night, but with weak goaltending the idea of playoffs are like a joke to me.
Tonight was the night of the young guns with Stamkos, Viktor Stalberg and Tyler Bozak getting 4 of the goals scored tonight. In overtime, Tocchet decides to play 3 forwards and only Kurtis Foster as the lone defenceman, which looked silly in the end with Lecavalier racing back, clearly gassed trying to defend a 2 on 1 and Phil Kessel putting it past Smith.

Corey Haim’s cause of death: pulmonary congestion
Thursday, March 11th, 2010 Corey Haim died of pulmonary congestion, the actor’s mother has told Access Hollywood.
"Judy Haim told Maria that she received an early courtesy call from the LA County Coroner’s Office who told her that an autopsy found her son had an enlarged heart and his lungs were filled with water," Access Hollywood says. "His cause of death was due to pulmonary congestion."
There's no confirmation yet on what medications were in Haim's body. The '80s teen idol died early Wednesday morning in Burbank, Calif., after suffering for a few days from flu-like symptoms.
